2021 Summer Students

Misha Dhuper

Research Assistant

Misha is a summer research assistant at the UHN Centre for Mental Health. She is currently completing her medical education at the University of Toronto and has a Masters of Public Health from Brock University. She is also an alumna of the Biomedical Sciences program at the University of Ottawa, where she minored in psychology. Misha’s research interests are broad and range from qualitative research, quality improvement, and advocating for policy changes, especially within the field of geriatric physical and mental health. She hopes to continue to explore these realms of research in the coming years.

Maryam Golafshani

Medical Student

Maryam is a mad (in both senses) medical student, early career researcher, and settler living in Tkaronto (Toronto, Canada) with her grumpy senior cat Pepper. She studies medicine at the University of Toronto, and previously earned her BA in English Literature, Theory, and Criticism and MA in Critical Theory. Broadly, Maryam’s research is concerned with how medicine functions affectively, discursively, phenomenologically, and politically—and how it can/should change. She’s studied and researched in Canada, the UK, and US, and most recently co-led an AAMC-funded scoping review on the use of arts and humanities in medical education. Clinically, Maryam is interested in mental health care in both general practice and psychiatry, with a special interest in bipolar and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

Sapna Humar

Research Assistant

Sapna is an undergraduate student at the University of Toronto, specializing in pathobiology and majoring in immunology. Her current research at the UHN Centre for Mental Health focuses on the more qualitative aspects of organ transplantation and the personal perspectives provided by both recipients and donors. Specifically, she has done work on recipient views of Hepatitis C positive organs, as well as the psychosocial experiences of anonymous living liver donors, with a goal to help improve the transplant program to best cater to individual needs. Sapna is working toward a future career in medicine and is very excited to have the opportunity to work at UHN this summer.

Hilarie Stein

Medical Student

Hilarie Stein is a medical student, a devourer of good books and a backcountry camper. She completed her bachelor’s in health sciences at the University of Ottawa and is currently studying medicine at the University of Toronto. She has a passion for mental health and wellness. Her interests lie in exploring what makes a happy healthy human for both her future patients and fellow healthcare professionals. She is currently working on a Toronto-UK collaborative mixed methods study of the experiences of healthcare workers accessing mental health supports during the COVID-19 pandemic.
